Blings

Newsweek published a story on the diamond industry late last year , highlighting the pain labourers go through so that you and I can own a piece of rock. Congo, a land filled with diamonds, yet the people live by working and suffering. No roads or hospitals, no infrastructure. Read here.

Amanda gave this link last year. A series of photos that show how diamonds journey from the hands of the labourers to the ring on your finger. Something we don't think about when we step into the jewellery shop.

In another link she gave, it says the 10 reasons why people should not buy or receive diamonds. It meant nothing to me when I read it. But after watching Blood Diamond, it came to me how corrupted the world can be. Many diamond producing governments and rebel forces use children as soldiers, laborers in military camps, and sex slaves. Child soldiers are given drugs to overcome their fear and reluctance to participate in atrocities.

In that show, the rebels recruit young children, like Dia, to fight the g0vernment, to exploit the labourers. It is disturbing to see 'em carrying guns, taking drugs, and being robbed of their innocence. But newspapers, magazines, photos... they reminded us how real this situation is today.

Blood Diamond is a really great movie. Leonardo was absolutely amazing, the effects of the movie was perfect but beyond that, it brings home the message how messy this world is. Visit the official website and you can find vast information about the global conflict of this industry.

It may be entertainment to some of us, but Blood Diamond is impactful. Do watch.
